Thanks for putting the discussion I started in the right place. What can I say? Allergy season has started with a vengeance and Benedryl is a helluva drug ;).

Angela Shafer replied to Tennyson E. Stead's discussion 'Being Efficient with Dialogue' in the group The Writers' Group
Interesting points. The reason I'd asked the question was because of, yes, the 'Titanic' moment, but my experience, so far, is in theatre. I remember one of the directors I worked with as a stage manager always said you never question…

Thank you ever so much for the invite, Tennyson. I was just thinking about what topic I would like to discuss. I have a tendency to pick on the James Cameron film 'Titanic' because I don't think it was very well-written, though it won…

There is a distinction, and you put it well. There is validity to the worry about whether people will come to see something so-called controversial, I hate to say. It's a little off-topic, since it isn't about film, but I remember people…

Nobody in this town is afraid of controversy, I promise. What they fear is that nobody will watch - pure and simple. If you're interested, check out this blog entry. It actually goes into how and why that is, and what folks like us can do about…

My friend, I could not agree more. I believe that we, as storytellers, should tell stories that reflect the reality of our world's population. I've heard so many talk about how certain groups just aren't represented in film. You…

My theater training is what makes those issues clear for me. When push comes to shove, it's for the audience. Storytellers are in service, and you've gotta love the people you're serving if you're going to do a good job. When…

I grew up wanting to be the greatest actress who ever lived (really, that was my goal, nothing too dramatic) but when I started getting story ideas and decided to switch to writing, I had to learn that others will have opinions and suggestions. At…

One thing I've learned: filmmaking is collaborative. All collaboration is business. Everyone wants to be their own boss, but nobody wants the work... and you've got to decide. To me, it's worth it. Knowing how the business of film…

Yeah, I'm not the business type, though I should be at least a little since filmmaking is a business and has to be thought of that way. I have plenty going on already, starting a production company, producing, all of that is way beyond what I…

Trust me. If you want a production company, produce movies. Both Sam Bailey and Heartsgaard are small projects - about conflicts that can be accomplished by doing things normal people do, even if they're hard. Keep the script contained, and…

About Me:
I am a screenwriter currently working on yet another screenplay, hoping this one is the one that'll get produced (fingers crossed). The story is titled "Preordained" and has its own network on ning.com if anyone would like to check it out.
I have a strong theatre background as actor, stage manager, and sound tech. If theatre paid better, I'd likely be there.

My theater training is what makes those issues clear for me. When push comes to shove, it's for the audience. Storytellers are in service, and you've gotta love the people you're serving if you're going to do a good job. When hearing critiques, when deciding to sell a script or try and produce it, it comes down to what's best for the audience. In an ideal world what's best for them means more money for everyone, so it's not a bad foundation businesswise Moreover, it's the creative root of what we do.

That's another important part of knowing the business - the most important part. Looking out for the audience.

Everyone wants to be their own boss, but nobody wants the work... and you've got to decide. To me, it's worth it. Knowing how the business of film works lets me take care of my people and my stories the way I think is best. Plus, it lets me make my own decisions.

That's why every single director or producer on the stage knows how to set up a non-profit in their sleep, when you think about it.

Keep the script contained, and financially attainable. Then, move onto the next step, and the next one...

Hey, Angela! That was me with the Unified Pictures and the Twitter, if you're interested. My friends and I built that company from the ground up, and I'm basically taking over as Czar of Social Media there.

I'm three episodes away from the end of Season Six. Willow just went berzerk... If you're curious about Heartsgaard, I posted the scripts for the film and the play in the one discussion in the Heartsgaard group. Feel free to give them a looksee.

Checked out your site - as it happens, Heartsgaard is a comedy that deals with the past life drama and the present-day challenges of an actor trying to make a buck.
