Quantum Theory is a story that deals with altering the very fabric of reality so that it works in your favor. For instance, you could make a gun jam that wasn't supposed to, cause a building that was completely sound to collapse or even make someone a bit slower on the uptake, thereby influencing their decision making.
This got me wondering about the two main concepts of time/time travel. In time travel theory, there is the "Grandfather Paradox" which states that if someone discovered that their own grandfather was an evil monster and decided to go back in time and prevent him from committing some atrocity by killing him before both the atrocity and the birth of the time traveler's own father, then the time traveler would have never been born, thus he wouldn't have gone back in time to kill his grandfather. This idea basically states that the universe "rights" itself if the time travel math don't work out. This whole concept of time being one continuous line, like a river, is know as a linear timeline.
However there is another theory on how the space-time fabric prevents itself from being torn apart - non-linear time lines. This theory supposes that if you went back in time and killed said theoretical grandfather then you would create a separate timeline in which you never existed. But, the old time line where you did exist would still survive, residing next door to this new timeline. This supposes that time is like a tree with many branches and that you can never truly change the future by influencing the past. This theory has been popularized in shows like "Sliders" and Micheal Crichton's "Timeline".
So what do you all think? Which theory do you buy into?

The only thing that I don't like is the fact that the bad time line keeps going. I thought the third theory was like what they were doing on Fringe but I'm not sure. I don't think the characters have the kind of control that quickly changes events or moves characters from one reality to another as you have talked about above though. Both worlds in 2 of the realities are dying because of some things that Walter did. Peter and all the characters are in all the realities unless they died. Many of the characters flip between realities sometimes living out a story in that reality. Sometime it connects or influences events in other realities other times it doesn't. I think there are 4 different realities. Peter is trying to use a machine to get home from another reality but that machine has caused problems for different realities. There is a watcher whose job it is to follow all these realities and fixes things to keep all going. He's just told Olivia that he's checked all the time lines in the different realities and she has to die in all of them for things to be ok. I think he also looks for the best scenario for an event to right everything. What do you think is it similar or not Fun to ponder;)

Im interested to see that it has a watcher. That kind of reminds me of "The Watcher" who is an alien who watches the varied time lines in the Marvel Universe. I subscribe to the multiple time lines theory myself. In fact I think reality may just be our brain's feeble attempts at dealing with the fact that there is no time and that past, present and future and all their possibilities are happening right now all around us. Also I recommend Stephen Kings new book 11/22/63, which is about a man who finds a wormhole back to 1958 and sets about trying to prevent Kennedy's assassination. It has some interesting thing about the nature of time and our ability to change the past.
Permalink Reply by Francine S.Marzilli on February 13, 2012 at 3:09pm I think Fringe might be fun for you to watch because of your work on "Quantum Theory". But I think that you have to start from the alternate universe thread and follow it through. That didn't start at the beginning of the series. I find it confusing because all of the breaks they take. After watching last weeks episode I think Peter might be in his own reality but doesn't know it because noone recognizes him. I think that is because "The Watcher" tried to erase him but didn't do it completely. He was showing up to Walter in any reflective surface causing him to think he was going crazy. Olivia is starting to have dreams about times with Peter. At the end of the episode Olivia claimed she is starting to remember their past.
I looked up 11/22/63. Looks like a great read. I'll definitely pick it up.
In response to your theory that there is no time and that it's our brain's attempt to deal with past, present, and future happening at once I have some questions. Why can we remember the past and not see the future? Wouldn't it make more sense to forget the past and see the future. After all we can't change the past but we can change the future. At least in our reality. And if all this is happening in multiple realities... Why has our brain shut off the other realities? Why can't we choose the reality we want? Something to think about.
