Ok... kind of an odd question, granted, but I've been researching death metal bands lately to get a better angle on the character of Reggie and I was wondering if anyone here has any "favorite" death metal bands they could point me to?

To be honest, the only one I'd really listened to or heard much about before Heartsgaard was Dethklok... which, while being a parody of the genre in a lot of ways (and the stars of an adult swim show) is also kind of awesome.

I'm slowly weaving my way across the interwebs now, looking for more music to listen to, so any suggestions that any of you fine folk might have would be invaluable.

Cheers,
Shawn

I was thinking Cannibal Corpse, that definitely falls under death metal. Also, Ask the Death Metal drummer himself, Dan of ATI.
Hey Shawn.

Sorry that I only noticed this right now (I'm a drummer, after all). Death Metal is a very particular metal genre with MANY subgenres, believe it or not.

It's going to take some getting used to, although Dethklok is actually a good way to start. As with most metal, it's best to start with something familiar like them then move into the more obscure (and severe) stuff as your taste progresses.

After Dethklok, check out Slayer if you haven't already, then Sepultura and the actual band Death (they're credited as one of the main bands that started the style). From there, as you get used to the vocal style and breakneck-speed guitar solos, try out Napalm Death, Morbid Angel, Obituary, Deicide, Nile, Hate Eternal, Carcass and Gerard's suggestion, Cannibal Corpse (they were the band in Ace Ventura). These bands are some of the quintessential death metal bands that almost anyone that's into the genre listens to or at least knows about.

If you need more suggestions, let me know. As I said, it gets increasingly obscure (and BRUTAL) from this point but this should give you quite a bit of background.

Hope that helped. Good luck - and happy listening! :)

-Dan
