Over the course of my entertainment career, one principle I keep coming back to is that Hollywood's preoccupation with creative ideas as the foundation of a creative process reflects a core misunderstanding of how showbusiness works and what makes a show great. My Developmental Breakdown blog on this issue covers this principle in deeper detail, and the gist of my point is that the craft of filmmaking is a latticework of good habits. Feed any…Continue

Financing Films: what are the best steps/precautions?

Before I start to approach investors, I'd like to partner up with an up and coming lawyer.  This way, this newest member of our production team can look out for our legal needs as well as be one of the producers. Then I'd like to find an interested distributor, then approach a well known actor, Only then would I approach investors with our lawyer at our side. I've even looked at Tax Incentives/Tax Shelters which would further protect our investors' monetary contribution. If any of this seems…Continue

Culture and the Necessity of Cultural Leadership

Started by Tennyson E. Stead Aug 12. 0 Replies

Since my brain injury in 2013, I have sustained my film career by distilling the mechanics of the entertainment industry down to the most essential load-bearing standards and practices and by placing my focus exclusively therein. As one of the many fruits of my march towards simplicity in showbusiness, I have arrived at a…Continue

A Personal Review of "Brilliant Traces," dir. VK Lynne

Started by Tennyson E. Stead Jul 16. 0 Replies

"Brilliant Traces," I am told by director VK Lynne, has been widely panned and criticized as an overwritten, obtuse mess of a play that only gets staged by directors who like thinking they're smarter than the audience. When actor Sean McHugh brought the text to her and asked her to direct, she had reservations.  Gradually, the play grew on her and she went to work.  Having seen the sublime results of her labors…Continue

What is a repertory film company?

For the first time in history, the majority of our industry leadership did not grow up in showbusiness. Most executives and agents today have no framework for understanding showbusiness "traditions" as actual systems of management that have been honed and passed down over centuries in the form of habit, and they are blind to the fact that our present creative and financial problems in Hollywood stem from a failure to instill these habits in new generations of showpeople. Our work at 8 Sided…Continue

Aristotle Knows How This Works

Started by Tennyson E. Stead Jan 10. 0 Replies

“Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but we rather have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.”― AristotleContinue

Dallas International Film Festival

I had the most amazing time at DIFF this week.  April's and my film GIRLS!GIRLS!GIRLS! was screened there in association with DIFF and Dallas Women in Film.  The festival is amazing.  So classy and beautifully put together.  Each filmmaker was treated with respect.  And to my absolute pleasure 9 times out of 10 when I told staff member or volunteer my name, they instantly knew which was my movie!  Everyone went above and beyond to make my experience wonderful.  But the one who was the most…Continue
