What's so all-fire great about Dr. Who?

Man! Everybody loves Dr. Who! Even Tennyson is raving at me about it! I'm a bad nerd in that I really have only watched Tom Baker as a kid *dates self*. I really have seen only a handful of episodes from eccelston (probably misspelling) on. So what is it that you guys love about this show? Why should I watch it? The completist in me wants to start on Netflix and watch as much of classic Who as they have and proceed from there. But is this a bad idea for a casual watcher?

So, Russian meteor: tons of people were really hurt, lots of stuff destroyed, I'm sure it was super scary and awful but it's also kind of badass. I'm not saying I want myself or others or property to be injured but talk about a once-in-a-lifetime experience to live through! Anyone agree, or am I delusional and meteors should stay far far away?(Okay I know it seems I am obsessed with meteors but it's really astronomical phenomena in general; meteors are just more frequent.)Continue
